On-Demand Writing Instruction
Obviously, we embed on-demand writing instruction into our lessons almost daily. However, there are two occasions on which our students will be formally assessed by the state for their ability to write on-demand: grades 10 and 11. I created this page to be a resource for Scott High School English teachers when considering resources to prepare students for the state assessment and beyond in on-demand writing.
What is Kentucky's On-Demand Writing Test like?
Obviously the test is a little bit different every year, because we do not know exactly what prompts and/or reading passages our students will get. However, we do know the following.
- How many on-demand writing responses will our students write? Our students will write two on-demand responses.
- What type of prompts will our students see? Students will be prompted to write in two different ways. One task will require students to write for an informational/explanatory purpose. The other will require students to write for an argumentative purpose. One of these prompts will be "passage-based." One of the prompts will be "stand-alone."
- What is a passage-based prompt? A passage-based prompt will include a relatively lengthy reading passage which students will be expected to use/reference in their responses. Students will get 90 minutes to respond.
- What is a stand-alone prompt? A stand-alone prompt may include a very short passage which students will use/reference in their responses. Students will get 40 minutes to respond.
- Will students get to choose from multiple writing prompts? On stand-alone tasks, students get to choose between two prompts.
