"Theme for English B" by Langston Hughes
First thing's first: Let's recap our AP Passage Analysis for today.
After this, students discussed yesterday's assigned excerpt from Funny in Farsi by Firoozeh Dumas. This led to each student coming up with his/her own definition of the word communication on page 14. Instead of completing the rest of SpringBoard page 10, we filled the margins of the page with (denotative) definitions: irony, idiom, allusion, and occasion. Students also added this word to the Advanced English II Word Wall. (Remember, you are absolutely accountable for these words!) Our last activity was to read "Theme for English B" by Langston Hughes, which begins on SpringBoard page 18. While reading, students marked multiple personal connections with explanations and a "!" symbol.
