Writing a Thesis StatementIf you missed class today, you will need to print yourself a new EOC Passage Analysis as well as "Ain't I a Woman" by Sojourner Truth, and then complete the following question.
Whose claims does the speaker respond to in greatest detail? A. the negroes of the south B. the women of the north C. that man over there D. those that talk about intellect During class, we took notes on the definition of universal idea, theme, and thesis statement. (If you weren't here, get these notes from a classmate.) Then, students finished SpringBoard page 20. Homework: Read "Where I'm From" in your SpringBoard text and complete the writing prompt at the end. College Readiness through ACT PracticeStudents started today with the last EOC Passage Analysis for "Straw Into Gold." Here is the question.
Students turned in the completed EOC Passage Analysis stapled to the front of the "Straw Into Gold" passage, so if you were not here, it is your responsibility to turn this in with a completed Late or Make-Up Work Cover Sheet stapled to the front of everything. The last thing that students did in class today was take an ACT Practice test for English -- Test #67C. If you missed this, you can make it up on your own this weekend by writing your answers on notebook paper or you can wait until you return to class and I will give you a Scantron form. Either way, if you turn the test answers in after today, you must attach them to the back of a completed Late or Make-Up Work Cover Sheet. Homework: I'm giving you the weekend to take another look at your TWIST (based on "Theme for English B")in your SpringBoard text and ensure that it's ready for me to see/check! "Theme for English B" by Langston HughesFirst thing's first: Let's recap our AP Passage Analysis for today.
After this, students discussed yesterday's assigned excerpt from Funny in Farsi by Firoozeh Dumas. This led to each student coming up with his/her own definition of the word communication on page 14. Instead of completing the rest of SpringBoard page 10, we filled the margins of the page with (denotative) definitions: irony, idiom, allusion, and occasion. Students also added this word to the Advanced English II Word Wall. (Remember, you are absolutely accountable for these words!) Our last activity was to read "Theme for English B" by Langston Hughes, which begins on SpringBoard page 18. While reading, students marked multiple personal connections with explanations and a "!" symbol. Homework: SpringBoard page 20 (skip thesis statement) "Funny in Farsi" by Froozeh DumasToday, students used "Straw Into Gold" to answer the following question on their EOC Passage Analysis.
In class, students made an awesome quilt and then completed the top half only of page 10 and then for homework, students read "Funny in Farsi" beginning on page 11. Tomorrow, I will check books to make sure that you did, in fact, mark up the text while you read. If you missed class, you will need to add your quilt square tomorrow and ensure that you keep up with book work! "My Mother Pieced Quilts"Good morning! If you missed class today, it is your responsibility to carefully read and follow the August 20th Daily Boards. Instructions for students who miss class are embedded.
Quilting with Imagery and MetaphorGood morning! Today, a few students turned in the Advanced English II Syllabus (which was due on Friday, August 16th) with a Late or Make-Up Work Cover Sheet. Then, students read/annotated SpringBoard pages 7-8 ("My Mother Pieced Quilts" by Teresa Paloma Acosta). If you were not here, please ensure that your Advanced English II Syllabus is in, that you have annotated SpringBoard pages 7-8, and that you have definitions written in your text (preferably with Activity 1.1 or 1.2) for all of the words on the Advanced English II Word Wall.
